My husband, Mike, and I will be celebrating our five year wedding anniversary on May 31, 2008. It's amazing how in this life, you may not always get what you want; you always get what you need.
Four months after we began dating, I suddenly became very ill. I was told that I would have to have major surgery; I would be out of work, during recovery, for at least three months. I didn't have any family that I could count on, however, my "future husband" took it upon himself to take care of me. Following my surgery, in 2001, he moved me into his condo. I wasn't able to walk up, or downstairs, so the couch became my bed. He literally had to do everything for me, from helping me eat, to changing my clothes, to taking me to my doctor appointments. All the while, he was very busy focusing on his mentally, and physically demanding career.
Eventually, I was well enough to go back to work; life seemed to get back to normal. We had been dating, now, for two years; decided that we wanted to get married. Since we were having a new house built, we wanted to have a simple wedding. We headed to Vegas, where we were married at The Little Chapel of The Flowers-in their Magnolia Chapel. Coincidentally, my best friend was also married there (but that one didn't turn out so well).
In spite of all of the challenges that my chronic illness has brought into our lives, my husband has truly lived his wedding vows above and beyond my expectations. He not only opened his heart; he also opened his home to me. I can't even imagine what I would have done without him. That is why I so strongly believe... in this life, you may not always get what you want; you always get what you need.
