The history of adding Leap Day to the calendar goes back to the days of Julius Caesar but the history behind Leap Year and marriage is much more interesting. As far back as the 5th century AD marriage proposals by women to men were allowed in a leap year. It is legend that this decree in Ireland, by St Patrick, was made to balance gender inequality just as Leap Day balanced the calendar year. The tradition spread throughout parts of Europe and eventually spread to the U.S. with Sadie Hawkins, a Li’l Abner’s female cartoon character, who is the inspiration behind the Sadie Hawkins dance, when girls were to ask boys to the dance.
